Sustainable Farm Initiative
In September of 2019, the Wakiso Hope Project purchased a 3-acre plot of arable land in Bunnamweri, Uganda which is situated 1.5 miles from St. Raphael’s School. Known as “Block 179,” this fertile plot of land has a natural spring that supplies a continuous source of water for the crops.
Since the purchase, the Wakiso Hope Project has harvested produce twice a year to feed students and faculty. Harvests include beans, cabbage, tomatoes, bananas and cassava.
Additionally, the Wakiso Hope Project has completed several development projects that have built up the farm infrastructure or invested in equipment including:
– building a farmhouse for the workers
– equipping the farmhouse with solar electricity
– clearing a road to Block 179
– installing a security gate and fencing around the property
– purchased tarps for drying beans, scales to weigh them and silos for storing them
– investing in a motorcycle for the farm manager to commute to Block 179 as well as shop for supplies
